KabierJust wanted to say that your artwork is absolutely stunning. Only just discovered your work the other day and you've already inspired me to try all these new techniques with my own digital painting. Subbed to your Patreon and will keep a look out for any Picarto streams in the future!

DatJerkFaceHonestly, I'm pretty thankful artists like you are around (I greatly dislike non-consensual sexual illustrations) and if my job paid higher I'd definitely support you on Patreon in an instant. That aside, I really love how you render your work and I hope to one day achieve a quality similar to that. I usually do grayscale, but I've yet to find satisfaction with my current skill level.

AstrassHello Calm! Lovely artwork, i noticed on your tumblr that you draw a lot in grayscale. How do you proceed to color afterwards? Gradient maps or something else? Thank you in advance for reading and have a good day!

CalmThank you! Yeah, I do tend to draw my initial sketches in just values, and then add colors before I start rendering in the details. My workflow isn't particularly strict about how I do it though, so it can vary from illustration to illustration. These days I've usually been adding colors using a Hard Light layer for the base colors, and then an Overlay layer with a few blobs of color here and there on top to make the colors pop. I also occasionally use Gradient Maps if there is a particular look I want on a surface.
In addition to this I also usually do a lighting pass on top before I start rendering, where I place shadows and light in a way that makes the scene read well and draw attention to where I want the focal points to be. I do that using a completely filled Multiply layer that adds shadow to the whole scene, and then a Divide layer on top where I paint in the light. Divide reverses the effect of Multiply (unless your values are approaching pure black), so you can make some pretty good looking light this way. It's just a little bit unintuitive at first because you get the opposite effect of the color you use on the Divide layer. For example, a dark cold color gives strong warm light. You should try it out! :)

JanRockYou've likely heard that over and over again, but you're the best cum-painter out there. ;) Not only that, but your fantastic sense of form, colour, the handling of light, as well as the happy and carefree attitude of everyone you depict - together it all creates a remarkable experience. You clearly have a very thorough academic, classic art background and if you don't - well, it's just all the more impressive. Keep at it, you're the kind of artist whom porn makers should aspire to be. :)

JanRockAnd you response means lot to me in return. :) With you latest upload, I'm again in awe of your technical skills - the rendering of skin and bodies, the light and shadow and the composition, they're all something else. You really are an inspiration and a wake-up call for me to improve with each new piece.

RelishWell color me impressed i would never have the patience to polish my illustrations to the extent that you do,
I just have to say i admire your style, super clean and bright, and they all just seem so freakin' happy (which is always a big plus in my mind).
That is some Blizzard quality work right there...
And the fantasy themed setting just makes everything even better :D

kissifrotssipikUh, to be honest, I think he's even above Blizzard-quality. I wish there were more futas in there (yeah, I know :p) but technically Calm is just he best artist on this site, period.

RelishC'mon man, no need to get quarrelsome, there are some awesome ppl that did art for blizzard just look at James Ryman, AJ Nazzaro, Mike Sass, Alex Horley, Matt Dixon, Luke Mancini, i could go on like this for a while :P
I meant it as a compliment and I'im pretty sure Calm took it that way (:
Blizzard came to mind because a lot of their recent art is quite clean and vibrant and it just reminded me of his style.
and on the best artist on the site point, there we agree, he is extremely talented  :D

ChezarinaYour art stands out from everything I've seen. The level of detail is incredible, and there's never over rendering. Your paintings are fun, exciting, fresh. There's magic in your brush strokes. I'm in love you your work! Thank you so much for sharing it, and for your inspiration. Whenever I need to start painting, I look at your gallery.
